As I previously mentioned, the CLA has endorsed a number of candidates in the upcoming bencher election. The procedure seemed to be that a sub-committee was formed which reviewed a questionnaire that was sent to all candidates who requested CLA endorsement. While the contents of the questionnaire was not disclosed (although I’m sure I could get a copy), I would assume that it focused on issues of importance to the defence bar, the main issue being funding of legal aid. Personally, I see it as very important that criminal lawyers have a voice at Convocation as they provide a perspective much different than our colleagues working in areas such as corporate law and civil litigation.
Here is the text of the endorsement:
Bencher Elections are important to all members of the bar. We encourage all CLA members to vote.
There are numerous well-qualified individuals running for bencher this year.
To ensure the interests of the defence bar are represented at convocation, the CLA Governing Body has reviewed materials submitted by candidates and has agreed to endorse 16 candidates.
We encourage all members to support these candidates.
The deadline for voting is April 29th, 2011. Further details about the Bencher Elections are available at the LSUC website: http://www.lsuc.on.ca/bencher_election
